Hazardous or toxic substance restrictions have traditionally been confined to certain product groups – EEE under RoHS for example – but with the advent of REACH in the EU all product manufacturers need to consider what goes into their products. The current REACH list substances of very high concern (SVHC) seems to be the tip of the iceberg, as countries such as China, Turkey and Korea develop REACH-style legislation, and NGOs such as ChemSec encourage manufacturers to pre-empt the latest restrictions with its SIN List.
